Just Another Squeeze

Just Another Squeeze Until The Light Is Interviewed

find the light

interview its meaning

squeeze out your reaction

one tear at a time

touch the light

the heat of the morning

wondering why we were ever so young

Just Another Squeeze Until The Light Is Interviewed - collage by Douglas Brent Smith, 1997, from Journal #32, p. 283, Secret Change Agent.

Competitive Reflex

What color would you say that rose is? My default is red, but it could be many other colors. Perhaps orange. Even yellow is possible. What color do you see? "But I don't see any color, Doug -- it's in black and white." "Is it? Is it really?" "Why did you keep using that clip art you created of the circle arrow?" "Must have liked it." "I wouldn't call this a collage, would you?" "Nah, just mixed media. Fun, though." "Maybe." Competitive Reflex - mixed media sketch by Douglas Brent Smith, 1998, from Journal #33, Life in Progress

Terra Cotta

Whatever floats your boat matters. Send yourself on a journey unique to your character, special for your strengths, resilient to your challenges.  My dad once made a canoe. He carved it out of a single piece of wood. He told me that it floated, the way a canoe should, but it leaned to one side. I never got in that canoe but I did see it. It's a gift to be able to make things out of wood, even if the first time you try it comes out a little wabi sabi. Behind the Secret Door

Behind the Secret Door (#2) Behind the Secret Door (#1) Notes: I think (hope) that #2 (the one above) is an improvement over #1 (which is the exact same picture except that in #2 I added some lines, drew over a few more, and shaded one area.

Study for Painting

Study for painting -- drawing by douglas brent smith Notes: I did actually paint this study, although it has been lost to the ages somehow, maybe in the fire in Louisville, maybe in one of my many moves. Too bad, it came out much better than this sketch. The window scene was different, featuring a VW beetle. The floor was black and yellow. It's an acquired taste but I really liked it. It was fairly large compared to my usual works, too -- probably 36 x 48 inches.

Please

Every have one of those moments when the GPS tracker in your phone assumes you are someplace that you're not? Imagine the history of locations you are creating that you've never ever been to. When I saw this, I had to screen print it immediately. Really? Please! -- doug smith

Song: Blue Before You Got Here

i was blue before you got here -- i'll be down after you leave it's deeper than you understand, recognize or believe when you're sad you could be crying - when love is dying you've got to grieve and i was blue before you got here - and i'll be blue after you leave i was blue before you got here -- you didn't change a thing you had no lasting happiness available to bring there is no lovers' island no blissful wedding ring and i was blue before you got here -- you didn't change a thing you warned me that you didn't care but how could that be true? thru endless conversations i felt so close to you you told me "don't start dreaming nothing good could last" and when you got tired of me you put me in your past but i was blue before you got here, you didn't pull me down no matter how good it felt -- having you around it hurts more than it did before, when i thought that we'd be found but i was blue before y...
